On January 1st, 1958, Johnny Cash played San Quentin State Prison. It was the first of many shows he’d play in America’s prisons and the start of a legacy that would influence countless artists who followed, including a young Merle Haggard, who just happened to be in the audience that day. Eleven years later on February 24th, 1969, just after the massive success of the Folsom concert had kick-started his stalled career, Cash went back to San Quentin with his rigid middle finger raised high in the air and a big chip, as well as an elaborately woven strap, perched proudly on his shoulder. Souldier straps has immortalized this triumphant return up the river to where it all started with a handmade replica of the very strap Cash used in that legendary performance.
